Literary Focus : Gentleman of Rio en Medio

# 8: Refer to the theme statement I made. What other poem, story or novel do I know that has a similar theme? Explain the similarities.

My theme statement: "What you offer is what you get." This theme statement is talking about the American's deal on Don Anselmo's house, they want a cheap house. So they got a cheap house, and the kids were taking over the tree in their back house.

I read a story with a similar theme, I read it online, so I forgot the name of it. It was about a man with very mean personality, and he has a brother with a very nice personality. One day, the older brother decided to sell his old house to his new one. He offered the price very expensive! So no one wants to buy it.

The younger brother decided to sell his, too. Unluckily, his house was very small, narrow and dirty. So no one wants to buy it. One day, an old man wanted to trade his house to the younger brother, because the younger brother's land was very fertile. The old man turned out to be a very rich man, and the younger brother got a big mansion in return.

The older brother saw this and decided to do the same thing. Another old man also came to the bigger brother's house and trade. He agreed and got a small house, worse, it is by a pig house.

The theme in this story I just told is "Don't be selfish and rush things. Just slow down and offer what you have for the can't." The last part was the similar part. Because the older brother is just like the Americans. Americans wanted big house, and cheap price, and they got the kids in the backyard. The older brother expected a big house when trade, so he rushed things and got a small house. So both of the parties were selfish and wanted everything for themselves.

So, both of them got what they want (or not). They are both selfish, both are scheming and both don't think about others.

Literary Focus question!!

I chose question number 8, which is evaluate:

The theme that I think states the insight about life in this story is:

. It is hard to walk in another person's shoes

Well, as I understand this in my own words. It seems like it's trying to say that being in another person's problem is hard. If you are a stranger, it would be consider hard to understand another person's problem, but in this case, it's all about family. So even though it is hard to try to figure out another person's problem, it'll be best if you study them or ask them questions. Rather than trying to break the question right away and go into the subject, that would cause harm for you and the opposite person. This is my opinion, but I think Terry should slowly moving onto his questions about the Vietnam syndrome and his father. This should work, because it would create a harmony atmosphere or feeling to his father when Terry try to approach it, slowly.

Describing a person you know!

I have a little sister, her name is Star. Star is a tedious 8-year-old girl. She always tell lame jokes that she thinks of. Talking off-topic, which doesn't really make anyone happy, or feeling like they want to laugh. Not only that she loves to talk, whenever she met a new person, like Mom's friend. She will stand there and fidget, playing with her fingers and not being normal; she acts like a kid, as always. She likes to wear flower clothes or clothes with design on them, she said they make her looks like a rainbow! I think she's just archaic. I mean, who wears clothes with peace signs on them anymore? Especially with flowers and incenses? She also expecting a bit too much! Once, she wished her birthday present is a robot dog that can talk! She's my, Aeris, little sister, Star.

Flowers for Algernon

I chose question number 9 for my answer.

I think the people who dislikes the people who are different from them are rude and not considerate. I used to be hated because I was different from others long ago, and it didn't feel too good, that means I've felt what being hated and isolated like, and I think that is very not right. Since we are all humans, in the same community, why are there people who hated others? Just because they're not the same as them? I think that makes no sense at all. Like Charlie, he used to be stupid and he doesn't understand anything at all, especially when his co-workers make fun of him in the factory. Just because he's stupid, people would take advantage on him? Why? It sure helps them for entertainment, but did they ever think that: "Will something like this happen to me?" I'm pretty sure not. So why don't they get smarter instead of Charlie?

My own opinion is that, why don't we just all get along? It obviously helps a lot! And nothing will go wrong if we do that. I hate people who are arrogant and hate the people who are different from them. We're all humans, there's nothing wrong about it!
