Barbara Frietchie Literary Focus

Literary Focus

Question 1: Discuss the bravery or folly of Barbara Frietchie's response, "Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,/but spare your country's flag."
Answer: In this question, I think Barbara is telling the shooting men that she has enough courage to die under the flag of her country, rather than having those men shooting her country's flag and she will become a slave for them. This action showed me that Barbara Frietchie is very courageous and loves her country, since she is showing that through her words and actions, she wants America to see her death, because she is standing up for her country, but she does not want America to die when she still lives in it and will be a slave for the shooting men.

Question 2: Narrative poems contain characters. What do Frietchie's actions reveal about her?

Answer: Her actions throughout the poem tell me that she loves her country, she is not afraid of the soldiers even if they shoot her and let her die, she wants the soldiers to not shoot her country's flag, but not her. Barbara has the guts to stand up for what she loves, she is trying to show other Americans that nothing will stop them from taking back the freedom and peace for the country. Later on, when she died, the America flag hangs above of her grave, for other people to remember what a great person she was, sacrificing herself and not her country.

Having a chemistry lab day is potentially dangerous, because it could harm many students if they weren't careful with the chemicals and poison.

Proposal

Mom's and Dad's usually made proposals about rewarding the children at home if they reached a perfect mark in a test, since children liked to play and not study, and the method worked out pretty well for most families.

Hazards

Teachers thought that teenagers in high school were causing so many hazards; they broke the window glasses, they dunked nerds into toilets and they usually held food fights during lunch time.

Empowered

Many high school teenagers were empowered when they reached 16, their parents thought that at that age, it might be a good time for them to take care of themselves, but teenagers were teenagers, they rebelled and often left their homes.

Ample

Some of the reasons teenagers rebelled were because they weren't given enough ample opportunities to speak their mind. They wanted parents to listen to what they had to say but no, parents would most likely ignored the kids and left them alone.

Camp Harmony Literary Focus

Camp Harmony - Nisei Daughter

Literary Focus #6: Sone says the camp "Was hopefully called Camp Harmony." Do you think the name is appropriate or ironic? Support answer with evidence text.
I think the name for this interment camp, Camp Harmony, is a very ironic name for the camp. Since the camp is like prison, but just for the Japanese-American people. Harmony means agreement in feeling or opinion, and in the camp, it is not very harmony at all. The military that rules that camp might be very harsh and strict about living in there, there might be strict rules that is necessary in order to keep the people in there organized. Organizing the camp must be an important thing in this camp, because the government sorted the camp out into different separate areas, alphabetically and numerous. It is also very dirty, so maybe the government didn't care about making this place beautiful or peaceful to live in, and it's maybe a part of the get back from the Japanese when they bombed the Pearl Harbor in the past.
